The Accessories Wall: Cavalli's Apple Bag
Fashion Week Daily deemed it the new "It" bag
"Meet Roberto Cavalli’s latest It bag. It’s the Apple bag from his Fall/Winter 2008-2009 collection and the thing has already been scooped up by Jessica Simpson and Halle Berry. The hobo comes in black and metallic with patchwork details has a roomy unstructured shape, perfect for throwing in all that randomness. Cost: $2,995."
Enh. We thought the trend was moving away from those gigantic luggage-like bags, but it looks like the old girl still has some life to her. Ah, well. Fashion is a capricious bitch.
Seriously, though. What could Jessica Simpson and Halle Berry possibly have in those bags that their assistants and hangers-on couldn't carry themselves? It seems to us that the very women who can afford these gigantic diaper bags are the last ones who require such large ones.
Still, taken on its own, there is a fabulosity inherent. The texture and the shape are nice. It's just that we're a couple of clutch queens. Show us something so tiny that you can either take a tube of lipstick with you or a tampon but never both, and we swoon. Show us something with enough room to carry around a fax machine and we get quickly bored.
And you bitches?

Judging the Judges: Roberto Cavalli at Cannes 2008
Season Four judge Roberto Cavalli's creations were all over the red carpet at Cannes recently. Yes, of course, we have opinions, but we'll preface them by saying that we were never big fans of Cavalli, who, when he's not wallowing in Dullsville, occasionally takes side trips into Tacky Town.

Lorenzo likes it. Tom thinks it's dull. Whatever visual interest is provided by the flower embellishments is canceled out by the dreary cigarette-smoke color palette.
Remember, we're talking red carpet dresses here. Which means that "just pretty" ain't gonna cover it. There has to be an eye-catching quality to the dress, otherwise it's failed its primary purpose.

You know, we're really starting to hate that "titstrap" effect we're seeing more and more of. Yes, we get it. Your girls are so huge that a mere bra is not enough. You must have giant STRAPS running underneath them, over which your voluminous cups are spilling out. Why not just wear a hand-lettered sign that says "THESE ARE MY TITS"?

From Runway to the Runways: The Jumpsuit
Kara Janx struggling mightily in a Santino Rice jumpsuit from Season 2.
Like the swallows coming back to Capistrano, you can always count on some designer returning to that perennial non-classic, the jumpsuit and throwing a couple down the runway to see if they'll stick. We're currently in a "let's try this one more time" period as there have been several jumpsuits seen in the Spring/Summer collections this year.

In the "Pro" column, jumpsuits can be extremely versatile articles of clothing, with a range from "running out to the ATM" to "appearing on the red carpet." In the "Con" column you have decades of bad associations. Kind of like a female leisure suit except no one's currently trying to make the leisure suit happen.
The 2008 models show that versatility for which the jumpsuit is famous, but for the most part, they avoid the dowdiness and even ugliness for which they're somewhat infamous. Even if you hate them all, fear not. If past trendlines hold, they won't be around for very long.

Judging the Judges: Roberto Cavalli Fall 2008 Collection
Darlings, it's time for us to give our opinions on the Fall 2008 collection of Chris March's favorite designer, Roberto Cavalli. Style.com had this to say:
"Cavalli opened and closed with fifties fit-and-flare dresses, bare at the shoulders. For day they came in white, embroidered with pastel wisteria and mimosa blossoms; after dark they were accessorized with rhinestone tiaras like those you'd see at a high-school prom or a debutante ball. In between, he went to Peru, knitting up colorful homespun sweaters, printing black cashmere jackets with vibrant roses, and embroidering both a sweet pinafore dress and a sexy bustier with paillettes in floral shapes. Black sequins at the necklines of chiffon intarsia tank dresses protected the models' modesty coming, but going was an altogether different story.
The show didn't hold together quite like Spring had—and then there was the caveat that, despite a few, almost craftsy patchworked furs, it didn't feel like a Fall collection. Not that the Cavalli faithful will much mind. They have the financial wherewithal to winter somewhere warm, and, once there, a black broderie anglaise dress—the show's loveliest look—will suit them just fine."
We're with them on the "not feeling like a Fall collection" thing. Oh sure, the days of strictly sticking to autumnal colors are gone (for now), but the pastel florals seem to be leaning too far in the other direction. We'll always applaud a designer willing to plunge up to their elbows in prints, so he definitely gets marks for that. We also like the Peruvian inspiration, but it's a little too Machu Picchu for us. The silhouettes are pretty, if a little basic. We just don't love the color choices for the most part. Not because they're not the expected harvest colors, but because some of them are too over-saturated. And while we're not hardcore "fur is murder" anti-animal skin advocates, we have to say that the use of it in this collection was off-putting. More of a "slap some fur on it" aesthetic than anything else. The effect is a little gross.
