Sew Not Over: Steven and Ricky

Steven:
"My life seems to be full of contradictions these days, so I wanted to convey that through the "Sew Not Over" line. I wanted to make cute, fun cocktail dresses that were full of their own contradictions. Instead of bright colors, I used black. And instead of using typical evening fabrics, I used black wool cashmere I bought in Paris over Thanksgiving. I liked the idea of the juxtaposition of these elements with a silhouette that's so familiar -- just reinterpreted in different materials."

Peggy Sue Got Married meets Mad Men. While these are very pretty dresses, they look like period costumes to us, especially the first two. There's no updating or reinterpreting; they're just pretty much exact replicas of dresses our grandmothers wore. The third not so much. Not coincidentally, that one's our favorite.

Ricky:
"My look for the online challenge … it's all kinda sorta built around this lace. I want the girl just to slip in naked and it's perfect."

Well first off, the hats. No. We suspect he thought he was being cute, but...no. The Minnie Mouse gloves don't help. The first and third dresses are okay, but they're right on the border of TackyTown. That second dress isn't on the border; it's standing in the middle of TackyTown Square twirling a baton and setting off fireworks.

NOOOOO!!!! Not Squinty McDimpleson!

He can't go home! He's too cute!

Then again...

To use Steven's favorite phrase, "Sweet merciful crap." As adorable as we think he is, we can't really argue with the judges' decision last night.

Did he have the worst garment with which to work? Absolutely. But Steven honey, on Project Runway, that's your cue to really pull out all the stops because the judges lap that shit up when you take crap and make something fabulous out of it. They even admitted that this look was the one they were most looking forward to.

He made 3 major mistakes. First, he got a little high-falutin' about the materials. Honey, we're right there with you looking down at poly satin and acetate lace. We can understand declaring that you don't work with those materials. Thing is, most designers don't work with corn husks or leaves or garbage either. This is Project Runway, girl! You're expected to work with crap!

Second mistake: going with black. Dull, dull, dull. We still had hopes that he was going to something dramatic, like white lace laid over black, but no such luck.

Third, making a dress. This was supposed to be everyday wear. Sure, plenty of women wear dresses every day, but this was a little too "cocktail" for the office.

Which isn't to say it looked sophisticated, because (sorry Steven), it didn't.

The very definition of "dowdy."

We'd love to do our patented nitpicky dissection of the garment, but there's really not much to say. It's a very basic department-store black dress. He just didn't do anything interesting with it.

We're so gonna miss his dimples and facial expressions. Buck up, Dimples! You can have consolation sex with us, okay? Call us!

And on that note...

"Does being on the show get you laid more?
You know, in a perfect world, it would. I have never had so little sex as the last four weeks. It’s just crazy. … It feels like I get to eight parties every seven days. And it’s just nuts. And maybe part of it is just me going, “Oh I gotta keep a low profile." Because God only knows what the tabloids are ever going to pick up if they ever care what anyone’s doing in Chicago (which I highly doubt). Can you imagine? "It’s cold there and some guy’s screwing his way through the Northside!"

SissyBear is gone.

*sniff*

We miss him already.

We weren't even planning on getting to him today, since it would require posting about 6 outfits in one day, but you bitches just wouldn't shut up about him on the Jillian post. Not that we can blame you. Who didn't love Chris?

To be honest, we could smell his auf'ing on the wind. Especially once his team mates basically decided he was the team leader. There is no greater kiss of death on Project Runway than being a team leader, is there?

A shame really, because this was one of the lowest-drama teams last night. Everyone seemed to be puttering along just fine without any ego getting in the way.

Although granted, Sweet P and Steven seemed to have reservations about Chris' outfit and didn't seem to voice them strongly enough.

To be honest...

...so did we. It just looks like dragwear to us.

Now, put down the knives, ladies. We're NOT saying he deserved to be auf'd but we DO think the judges' criticisms were for the most part, spot on.

We've said it before about Chris' work: it's a little too on the gay/fierce side of things and subsequently, a little dated-looking.

Now, we already hear you yelling at your monitors. "How can anyone do shoulder pads and NOT look dated?" But kittens, that WAS the challenge. To update a dated look. Chris, bless his gay heart, just didn't manage it this week.

We think that jacket fabric was a really bad choice and we agreed with the Duchess when she said it looked like it was still on the hanger. Little bolero jackets should fit the body a little better than that - especially if the shoulders are going to be exaggerated. We did like the bell sleeves, though.

And Duchess? Enough with the M.O.B. line. It was funny once.

We did like the dress, although it was a little dull. Again, poor fabric and color choices.

As for his teammates...

Hated it on the runway, but we're liking it more in the pictures. Dig that hem.

We think it's funny that Donna Karan liked this one the best, since it basically looks like a Donna Karan dress.

We kind of hate the turtleneck - especially in black - but we do think this was a good attempt at updating the baggy sweater look and making it modern while at the same time reminding you of its origins. In fact, this is the best thing Sweet P's made so far.

This:

Not so much. First, we hate the fabric.

Second, it doesn't look at all like dancewear. Dojowear maybe, but not dancewear.

It's not awful. In fact, it's kind of cute. We just think it didn't fit the requirements of the challenge and it didn't fit in with the collection.

Then again...

This doesn't look like a collection at all. Why did they pick such drab colors?

Oh Chris. We were so rooting for you. This competiton needs a sissybear who sounds like a cartoon character. These boring "professionals" are putting us to sleep.

As we said, we agreed with the judges' criticisms for the most part, but we don't necessarily agree that he should have gone home last night. If this all wasn't shot 6 months ago, we'd start a Bring Back Chris petition.

VictorYA and Steven

Yeah, we already used this picture. Sue us.

Now. Where were we?

We like. The white jacket is a bold choice that wouldn't look good on everyone but probably would've looked great on Tiki.

There's something weird going on with those pants, though. Poor boy's got saddlebags. And once again, those are the WRONG shoes. Is it us, or is the accessorizing way off this season?

Still, it's the jacket that makes the look. She was smart to make what looks like a simple t-shirt. It gave her more time to work on her other pieces and it lets the jacket do all the work visually. We really love the collar on this thing.

And the tailoring is almost dead-perfect.

Not much else to say than that. A well-executed, stylish look appropriate for the client and the venue. So of course, the judges completely ignored it.

We really loved this look. Sure it's a little too gay, a little too John Bartlett for Tiki Barber, but it was still a great look. There are a couple things wrong with the styling and tailoring, though. For one, those pants are too long.

For another, unless that boy's hung like a gay porn star, THAT's an insane crotch. But look! A BELT! HALLELUJAH!

Yes, the ascot was a ridiculously bad choice to make, but we loved that he used knitwear and we love the contrasting collar and cuffs. We kinda suspect that the ascot was a last-minute choice to cover up the fact that the collar is so wide. We wonder if people were having problems with their collars this week because Tiki's neck is so thick.

All in all, it's a stylish look that may not have been right for the client, but WE'D certainly wear it.

And kudos to Steven for hiding his erection while working.

Pocahomeless

Once the Duchess got the Pocahontas reference out of the way, we gave up on trying to be clever here.

Strangely, the sketch had a more sophisticated feel to it. We probably wouldn't have liked this version much better, but at least it didn't look like an old afghan.

We think those of you who don't think Steven is adorable are crazy and those of you who think he looks like Tom are blind. What's more fun than watching a cute, shy nerd get completely discombobulated by a middle-aged ragamuffin?

Actually, it was a little painful to watch. We felt a little bad for both of them but we're not gonna lie, we were relieved they didn't send Steven home. Marion felt like an inevitability almost from the beginning, but it wouldn't have seemed fair to send Dimples McNerdison home.

Bad as the outfit was - and it was REALLY bad - the styling only made it worse. What the hell is up with her hair?

Although granted, the most stunning hair and makeup in the history of ever wouldn't have done much to dress up this yarn monstrosity.

And the fringe? Seriously? Has fringe ever worked in fashion? We don't know, Marion seems like a really creative kinda guy, but his aesthetic struck us as pretty out there - and his personality was too low-key for reality television. We can't say we're surprised to see him go so early.

If clothing could cry, this is what it would look like.

Check out Marion's exit interview:
